Little the US can do to counter Venezuela poll

There is very little the US can do to counter the corrupt Venezuela
election without strong support from the major powers in Latin America (“Venezuela’s repressive election”, FT View, August 1).

With the rising influence of China and Russia in the region the leaders of these countries are focused on their own economies and not the politics of their neighbours. Recognising China’s investments in Venezuela, they will not risk China’s retribution by backing any intervention.

It’s all a reminder of the declining US influence in Latin America.
