The wealthy people who are supporting Donald Trump, such as Scott Bessent (Interview, October 14), are fools to believe they would have any influence on the direction of his economic policies. Trump has laid out the disastrous economic policies he plans for his next administration, including imposing tariffs, deporting all illegal aliens, sharply cutting taxes and eviscerating the Inflation Reduction Act. He will adhere to these policies and in the process severely undermine the economy.
Bessent claims there is nothing to worry about in another Trump term because Trump’s “a businessman — and he understands economics”.
The reality is Trump is an awful businessman. He has filed for six business bankruptcies; he has a record of consistently fleecing his suppliers; was convicted of falsifying business records; he cheated people who signed up for Trump University for which he had to pay a $25mn settlement and is accused of not paying his taxes.
The wealthy people who are supporting Trump do not care that he is a threat to the democratic fabric of the country; that he has been held liable for sexual abuse; that he tried to overthrow a free and fair election and he is a morally repugnant person.
All they care about is the tax cuts Trump has promised them because they believe their income is more privileged than everyone else’s.
