Letter: That trademark white suit

simplyspot

Being partial to a white suit, I’d like to counter Julia Cooper’s mention (Letters, August 24) of the dissolute Jay Gatsby with the unimpeachable, if less glamorous, Martin Bell. The BBC war correspondent stood in 1997 as an independent at the height of the “cash for questions” scandal. Bell’s trademark, apart from his incorruptibility, was his white suit. Unfortunately he promised to only serve one term, and, unlike so many politicians, actually kept his promise.
