Both Simon Kuper (“A tale of three very different elections”, Magazine, Life & Arts, FT Weekend, July 27) and Agustin Mackinlay (Letters, FT Weekend, August 3) credit the virtues of the constitutional monarchy for the moderate tone of British politics. That may be so.
Although I happen to share this view, you may also be interested to know that the Republic of Ireland has currently what I consider to be a more progressive formula for political moderation (and inclusiveness) which includes proportional representation, a coalition government, a rotating taoiseach (prime minister), and to top it all — a president who is a poet.
