In sealed cover, West Bengal governor lists reasons for not agreeing to 17 vice-chancellors picks

NEW DELHI: West Bengal Governor C V Anand Bose on Thursday handed over in a sealed cover to Supreme Court the reasons why he refused to accept the state government’s recommendations for appointment of vice-chancellors to 17 universities while agreeing with names for 19 other universities.Attorney general R Venkataramani handed over the sealed cover report for each of the 17 candidates recommended for universities by the Mamata Banerjee govt to a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh and said the material should be perused by the bench.Justice Kant said since the panel of names were shortlisted by former CJI U U Lalit, based on which the state government had made recommendations, the court would like Justice Lalit to scrutinise the material on the names recommended for appointment as vice-chancellors to the 17 universities.“It is possible that Justice Lalit may not have had the advantage of the material submitted now by the governor,” the bench said and posted the matter for hearing on Friday to find out the availability of Justice Lalit. The WB government through senior advocate Jaydeep Gupta said the recommendation for the 17 major universities, including Calcutta University and Jadavpur University, have been held up while names for the 19 smaller universities have been cleared.
