Baisakhi, also called Vaisakhi, marks the beginning of the Sikh New Year and it is also the time when Rabi crops are harvested and it falls on April 13 or 14 every year. And so, it is one of the most important festivals which is celebrated with great joy and fervour in North India, specifically Punjab. It is a time of joy, gratitude, and vibrant cultural traditions.
For Sikhs, Baisakhi also holds a lot of religious importance as it commemorates the formation of the Khalsa Panth in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. On this day, he initiated the first five Sikhs, known as the Panj Pyare, into the Khalsa—a collective body of devoted and fearless followers of Sikhism. This event is considered a turning point in Sikh history and is celebrated with great reverence.
Meanwhile, for farmers, Baisakhi is celebrated as a thanksgiving day– on this day, they thank God and nature for a good harvest and also pray for future prosperity. Since it is a day of joy, people are in a celebratory mood. The air is filled with the sound of bhangra and gidda dance performances. People dress in vibrant and traditional attires, and fairs and processions are held across towns and villages to celebrate the festival. And so, Baisakhi is a festival that brings people together
